Making Space is a series of workshops we created for emerging designers navigating the space between education and practice.

Making Space workshops by Studio Affogato bring together education, practice, storytelling, and material knowledge; giving opportunities to build confidence, make connections, and develop a deeper understanding of the design industry.
The workshops focus on keeping curiosity alive. We encourage designers to step away from algorithms and trends, and instead reconnect with storytelling, process, and creative thinking.
Design education often focuses on outcomes, whilst design practice requires confidence, adaptability, and communication. These workshops are designed to bridge that gap, helping designers develop practical skills, broaden their perspective, and better understand the realities of working in the industry.

Through mentorship, conversation, and shared experiences, we aim to build confidence, strengthen networks, and make space for new voices in design.
Each workshop includes conversations with designers, artists, photographers, and other creative practitioners. Rather than focusing on polished outcomes, speakers share honest reflections on their work, challenges, lessons learned, and the realities of building a creative career.
Workshops are hosted within supplier showrooms, creating opportunities to learn directly from the people behind the products. We believe designers should understand not only what they specify, but how it is made and where it comes from.
Thanks to all who attended our Making Space sessions for 2026. We have a new Making Space workshop series planned for 2027—announcing soon!
